The July 2026 AIMA automatic NISS: who gets one and who still needs to apply
In late July 2026 a long discussed change went live: an immigrant who starts a regularisation or residence process at AIMA, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, is assigned a NISS automatically, in real time, through the direct data link between AIMA and Seguranca Social.
Who gets an automatic NISS
The assignment is tied to AIMA regularisation and residence procedures. Applicants in those processes receive the number as part of the process, and people who already hold a NISS link it to their AIMA record instead of receiving a second one. Early reports from appointments described officers confirming the number was handled by AIMA itself.
Who it does not cover
The automatic route only exists inside an AIMA process. It does not help if your appointment is months away, if your route does not pass through AIMA yet, or if you need the number now for a reason that cannot wait.
When to still apply directly
Apply directly when you need the NISS before any AIMA appointment: to sign an employment contract, to open a self-employed activity and start invoicing, or to register a business role. Waiting for an appointment that has no date is not a plan when a contract is on the table.
One number, whichever route
Whichever route issues your NISS, it is the same single number for life. If AIMA assigns yours, do not apply again through any other route: duplicate applications create delays for everyone, including you. Check first, then choose one route.
